Supporting the Troops...
"To speak of supporting the troops and not understand that the only true way to enact that support is to make sure that kind of homecoming is what each of them and their families have earned is to reduce that support to a saying on a bumper sticker, to making it a meaningless brand name. Supporting the troops is supporting 1st Lt. Thomas Bourne, and supporting Amy Bourne and supporting Walker Bourne and supporting Preston Bourne. Supporting them is not making those two little boys have to cry again. It is not thumping a chest and waving a flag and threatening a dissenter. It is not what the Army Reserve is doing to Thomas Bourne and thousands more like him: sending him after his two weeks’ leave is up…back to Iraq."

Sick irony.
Apparently, with all the money we are spending on this silly war, we could've been powering up to 2/3rds of the nation with Solar power alone. Why do we keep pouring money into sending our kids to fight unjust, unprovoked wars when we can use that same chunk of money to divorce our selfs from the oil that keeps us over there? It just boggles my mind.

"Go Ahead, Rationalize. Monkeys Do It, Too."
Here's a great article on the New York Times website about how scientists and psychologists are learning how how we rationalize irrational behavior. Fascinating stuff.
"The compulsion to justify decisions may seem irrational, and maybe petty, too, like the fox in Aesop’s fable who stopped trying for the grapes and promptly told himself they were sour anyway. But perhaps Aesop didn’t appreciate the evolutionary utility of this behavior for humans as well as animals.
Once a decision has been made, second-guessing may just interfere with more important business. A fox who pines for abandoned grapes or a monkey who keeps agonizing over food choices could be wasting energy better expended obtaining the next meal."
